What Is Podiatry?
Podiatry is an allied health discipline dedicated to the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs. Podiatrists are university-trained, AHPRA-registered health professionals with the expertise to manage everything from common foot complaints — such as heel pain, ingrown toenails and plantar fasciitis — to complex clinical presentations involving diabetes, neurological conditions and chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Healthy feet are fundamental to your mobility, independence and overall quality of life, and our podiatrists are dedicated to keeping yours in the best possible condition.
At 1st Health Hub in Melbourne, our podiatrists take a whole-body approach to foot and lower limb health. We understand that foot problems rarely exist in isolation — pain in the feet and ankles can affect posture, gait and the health of your knees, hips and lower back. That is why every assessment looks beyond the immediate complaint, identifying contributing factors and addressing root causes so that treatment delivers lasting results rather than temporary relief.
As part of our fully integrated health centre, our podiatrists work closely with GPs, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and dietitians. This collaborative approach is especially valuable for patients managing complex conditions such as diabetes, arthritis or peripheral vascular disease, where coordinated care across multiple providers is essential to achieving safe, effective and sustainable outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Podiatry at 1st Health Hub
Everything you need to know before your first appointment.
Our team is happy to help. Give us a call or send us a message and we will get back to you promptly.
Do I need a GP referral to see a podiatrist?
No, you don’t need a referral to see a physiotherapist. You can book directly. However, if you have a care plan from your GP, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates on your sessions.
What conditions do podiatrists treat?
Podiatrists treat a wide range of conditions affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs, including heel pain, plantar fasciitis, ingrown toenails, corns and calluses, flat feet, Achilles tendinopathy, diabetic foot complications, sports injuries and fungal nail infections. If you are unsure whether podiatry is right for your concern, call us and our team will advise you.
What are custom orthotics and do I need them?
Custom orthotics are specially designed shoe inserts prescribed and fabricated based on a detailed assessment of your foot posture, gait and lower limb mechanics. They are used to correct structural imbalances, redistribute pressure and relieve pain caused by conditions such as flat feet, plantar fasciitis and sports injuries. Your podiatrist will advise whether custom orthotics are appropriate for your specific presentation.
How is diabetic foot care different from a regular podiatry appointment?
Diabetic foot assessments are more detailed and clinically focused. Your podiatrist will assess circulation, nerve sensation, skin and nail health and overall foot risk using specialised equipment. The goal is early identification of any changes that could lead to serious complications, along with a preventive care plan to keep your feet safe and healthy. People with diabetes are recommended to have a professional foot assessment at least once a year.
Is podiatry covered by private health insurance?
Most private health extras policies include podiatry cover. The amount reimbursed depends on your individual fund and level of cover. We process all major health fund claims on-site using HICAPS, so you only pay the gap on the day of your appointment. We recommend checking your level of cover with your fund before your visit.
Can children see a podiatrist?
Yes. We provide podiatry care for children of all ages, including assessment of flat feet, in-toeing, growing pains, warts and sports injuries. Early intervention for childhood foot and gait issues can prevent longer-term problems as children grow, so we always recommend seeking assessment sooner rather than later if you have concerns about your child’s feet or walking pattern.
What should I bring to my podiatry appointment?
Please bring any footwear you wear regularly, including work shoes, sports shoes and casual shoes. If you have existing orthotics, bring those as well. Wearing or bringing shorts or pants that can be rolled up to the knee is also helpful so your podiatrist can assess your lower legs and gait properly.
Can I see a podiatrist and a GP on the same day?
No, you don’t need a referral to see a physiotherapist. You can book directly. However, if you have a care plan from your GP, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates on your sessions.
